Synopsis of Hotel Savoy
Tras tres años como prisionero de guerra en Siberia, Gabriel Dan regresa a casa y se instala en el Hotel Savoy. Llega sin equipaje y le asignan la habitación 703, una de las más económicas, en el sexto piso. El gigantesco Hotel Savoy cuenta con 864 habitaciones, todas ocupadas. Gabriel, que no tiene padres, esposa ni hijos, visita a su tío Phöbus Böhlaug, quien vive lujosamente en la ciudad. Su tacaña familia solo le regala un traje usado. Los huéspedes de los pisos superiores del hotel no pueden pagar sus cuentas. El viejo ascensorista Ignatz le presta dinero a cualquiera que tenga una maleta. Los pobres huéspedes del hotel temen las rondas de inspección del director del hotel, Kaleguropulos. Se rumorea que el director es griego. Moses Joseph Roth was a Austro-Hungarian journalist and novelist, best known for his family saga Radetzky March (1932), about the decline and fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, his novel of Jewish life Job (1930) and his seminal essay "Juden auf Wanderschaft", a fragmented account of the Jewish migrations from eastern to western Europe in the aftermath of World War I and the Russian Revolution. In the 21st century, publications in English of Radetzky March and of collections of his journalism from Berlin and Paris created a revival of interest in Roth.
