Synopsis of Húmus

Publicada originalmente en 1917, Húmus es considerada la obra maestra de Raul Brandão y una pieza fundamental de la literatura portuguesa, siendo precursora del existencialismo y el expresionismo literario. La obra se estructura como un diario fragmentario y elíptico donde el narrador entrelaza la vida cotidiana de los habitantes de una villa con profundas reflexiones metafísicas sobre el dolor, la muerte y la creación. Esta edición forma parte de las Obras Completas (Volumen X) de la editorial Relógio D'Água, contando con una introducción de Maria João Reynaud. A través de su prosa poética, Brandão explora la condición humana y el vínculo invisible que une a cada ser con el universo, rompiendo con las convenciones de los géneros literarios tradicionales de su época.

Raul Germano Brandão was a Portuguese writer, journalist and military officer, notable for the realism of his literary descriptions and by the lyricism of his language. Brandão was born in Foz do Douro, a parish of Porto, where he spent the majority of his youth. Born in a family of sailors, the ocean and the sailors are recurring themes in his work.
