«I Want a Pet!» is the rhyming children's story by Kaye Umansky, published by Collins Educational in paperback (24 pages, in English).
The book follows a very picky boy looking for a pet at the Strange Pet Shop, a shop so peculiar that almost any surprise can fit inside. The text, written as a very repetitive rhyming poem, plays with anticipation and disappointment until an unexpected ending. The work closes with a shop sign, ideal for class discussion.
It is part of the Collins Big Cat reading series, at Band 05/Green level, with illustrations by Sarah Horne.
Aimed at early readers aged 5 to 7, it is a common resource in primary classrooms for practicing guided reading.
Kaye Umansky is an English children's author and poet. She has written over 130 books for children and her work ranges from picture books to novels. She is best known for the Pongwiffy & Jim Series.
