I'm the King of the Castle by Susan Hill is a chilling novel that explores the extremes of childhood cruelty. The story focuses on Edmund Hooper, a young boy who lives in Warings, a large and rambling Victorian house, with his widowed father. The arrival of Charles Kingshaw and his mother disrupts Edmund's life, who sets about subtly persecuting the fearful new arrival. Despite Charles' attempts to fight back, Edmund always seems to win the affections of the adults, foreshadowing that worse is still to come.
