«Joker» is the children's and young adult novel by Susie Morgenstern, published by L'École des Loisirs / Animax in paperback (61 pages, in French).
Hubert Noël, an unconventional teacher, hands out vouchers to his class that allow them to dance in the middle of a lesson or stay in bed. His teaching style clashes with the rigidity of principal Incarnation Pérez. The narrative alternates between the perspectives of students and teachers and champions what is not in the curriculum but makes life more dignified.
The work was originally published in 1999; this edition is from 2006 and includes black-and-white illustrations by Mireille D'Allancé.
For children and young adult readers; it has been used in elementary school classrooms to discuss rules of coexistence and school life.
