In 1931, Karl Hoffmann studies theology with his friend Erika during the Nazi rise. After resisting, he is sent to a concentration camp and continues the opposition in secret in Berlin. His father, a Lutheran pastor, rebels when the SA place the swastika on the cathedral. Karl returns to Magdeburg, where the Nazis attempt an attack on the cathedral.
The French translation is by Laurent Bury and includes an epilogue by Brigitte Krulic; the original title is Day of No Return.

Kathrine Kressmann Taylor or Kressmann Taylor was an American writer, known mostly for her Address Unknown (1938), a short novel written as a series of letters between a Jewish art dealer, living in San Francisco, and his business partner, who had returned to Germany in 1932. It is credited with exposing, early on, the dangers of Nazism to the American public.
