«Juan de Mairena» is Antonio Machado's prose work, published by Editorial Bibliotex in hardcover (380 pages, in Spanish).
The volume brings together maxims, witticisms, notes and memories of Juan de Mairena, an apocryphal and informal professor created by Antonio Machado as an alter ego for his own thought. Through maxims, aphorisms and ironic reflections, the author addresses philosophical, literary and social themes with an agile and accessible tone. The texts come from articles published in the press from 1934 onwards and show Machado as one of the most original prose writers in twentieth-century Spanish literature.
This 2001 edition belongs to the collection «Las Mejores Novelas en Castellano del Siglo XX» and includes a prologue by Alfonso Guerra. Published in Barcelona by Editorial Bibliotex.
Recommended for readers interested in twentieth-century Spanish literature, Antonio Machado's essayistic work and philosophical reflection full of irony.

Antonio Cipriano José María y Francisco de Santa Ana Machado y Ruiz, simply known as Antonio Machado, was a Spanish poet and one of the leading figures of the Spanish literary movement known as the Generation of '98. His work, initially modernist, evolved towards an intimate form of symbolism with romantic traits. He gradually developed a style characterised by both an engagement with humanity on one side and an almost Taoist contemplation of existence on the other, a synthesis that, according to Machado, echoed the most ancient popular wisdom. In Gerardo Diego's words, Machado "spoke in verse and lived in poetry."
