«La Bataille» is the historical novel by Patrick Rambaud, published by Grasset in paperback (301 pages, in French).
The novel recreates the Battle of Aspern-Essling (May 1809, Napoleonic Wars). It follows Marshals Lannes, Bessières and Masséna over two ferocious days that left some forty thousand dead near the Danube, and evokes Napoleon. It takes up the narrative project Balzac left unwritten for his «Scènes de la vie militaire».
The «Fin d'Empire» series begins with this novel, winner of the Prix Goncourt and the Grand Prix du Roman of the Académie française in 1997.
For readers interested in war fiction, the Napoleonic era and documented historical recreations.
