«La canción del pirata» is the picaresque novel by Fernando Quiñones, published by Planeta in paperback (343 pages, in Spanish).
Juan Cantueso, imprisoned in Cádiz in 1682, recounts his eventful life to the bachelor Román de Irala: his schemes to get ahead in Venice and Seville, his erotic adventures and his alliances with pirates in the Indies, until he ends up jailed over a murky affair with a pastry maker. Quiñones revives the picaresque tradition with humor and verve.
Finalist for the Planeta Prize 1983. The full title is «La canción del pirata: vida y embarques del bribón Cantueso». It belongs to Planeta's Autores Españoles e Hispanoamericanos collection.
For readers of picaresque and pirate adventures, with a prose in a classical register that some will find demanding.
