«La ciutat dels prodigis» is the historical and picaresque novel by Eduardo Mendoza, published by Edicions 62 in hardcover (448 pages, in Catalan).
The novel follows Onofre Bouvila, a young man of humble origins who arrives in a Barcelona in the midst of transformation and ends up becoming a powerful businessman. It describes the 1888 Universal Exposition, the Eixample and the tensions between rich and poor. Between historical chronicle and picaresque, it portrays the construction of modern Barcelona.
The work was originally published in 1986 under the title «La ciudad de los prodigios». This Catalan edition, translated by Xavier Lloveras, belongs to the El Balancí collection.
