While walking along the beach, a young man finds a strange and lonely creature, which he calls the lost thing. Finding no one to claim it, he decides to take it to his house, where his parents barely notice it. Faced with the family's lack of interest, the young man looks for a place for her and finds an advertisement for the Federal Department of Useless Objects. However, an employee advises him not to leave it there and gives him a card with a hopeful symbol. After searching the city, he finds a secret place full of lost objects, where the lost thing finally finds its home.
Shaun Tan is an Australian artist, writer, and filmmaker. He is known for his graphic novel The Arrival (2006), which won several awards, and for his 2010 animated short film adaptation of the 2000 picture book he wrote and illustrated, The Lost Thing, for which he won an Academy Award. He has also written and illustrated many other books, including The Lost Thing (2000) and The Red Tree (2001). Many of his works have won awards, including in the New South Wales Premier's Literary Awards and the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards, and many have been adapted for screen and stage.
