«La edad de los héroes» is the novel by Juan Manuel Sáinz Peña, published in 2010 by Editorial Sombra in paperback (140 pages, in Spanish).
The novel looks into the memory of Julio Caralo, an octogenarian man living in the «Santo Ángel» nursing home who recalls his life with nostalgia. His heroes do not fight in battles: they face old age and their final days with optimism and humor, and the narrative combines melancholy, tenderness and comic moments.
Winner of the first prize at the III Zayas Short Novel Contest 2010; the back cover reproduces comments by Rosa Montero and Miguel Aranguren.
For readers of contemporary Spanish-language fiction seeking stories about old age and memory, told with humor and tenderness.
