Este volumen recoge la triple producción de Virgilio, el poeta del amor. Cronológicamente, la primera de sus obras son las Bucólicas, que tratan sobre asuntos de pastores. El móvil de las Geórgicas era despertar el amor a los trabajos del campo en el ánimo de los nuevos propietarios, los soldados recompensados por Augusto. La Eneida, escrita a instancias de Augusto, trata de la fundación de Roma. De esta obra, que permite equiparar a Virgilio con Homero, destacan los libros IV y VI, los conmovedores amores de Dido y el descenso al infierno de Eneas, predecesor indiscutible de La divina comedia de Dante.

Publius Vergilius Maro, usually called Virgil or Vergil in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period. He composed three of the most famous poems in Latin literature: the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the epic Aeneid. Some minor poems, collected in the Appendix Vergiliana, were attributed to him in ancient times, but modern scholars regard these as spurious, with the possible exception of some short pieces.
