«La Fille américaine» is the mystery novel by Monika Fagerholm, published by Le Livre de Poche in paperback (640 pages, in French).
In 1969, on a peninsula in Finland, Eddie de Wire, a young American woman, visits her aunt. Two boys fall in love with her; after her disappearance, one is found hanged in a barn. The case haunts the place. Doris and Sandra, then girls, make that mystery the basis of their friendship. The novel explores adolescence and class violence.
Originally published as Den amerikanska flickan in 2004, it won the Augustpriset in 2005. First installment of the series Slutet på glitterscenen; French translation by Anna Gibson.
Aimed at readers of literary fiction and mystery, with an interest in coming-of-age stories and the atmosphere of rural Finland in the 1960s.
