In 'The Surprise Frigate', Captain Jack Aubrey is forced to accept a new mission in Admiral Nelson's fleet, leaving behind his aspirations for a quiet life with his beloved Sophie. In command of the frigate Surprise, and accompanied by Stephen Maturin, he embarks on a journey to the East Indies to lead a British ambassador to his destination. During this journey, they will discover landscapes and aromas of India, sail the spice islands route, and face the French ships sent by Napoleon to annihilate the English fleet in China. The novel combines action, historical fidelity, literary quality and fun, characteristics that Patrick O'Brian handles with mastery.

Patrick O'Brian, born Richard Patrick Russ, was an English novelist and translator, best known for his Aubrey–Maturin series. These sea novels are set in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars and centre on the friendship of the English naval captain Jack Aubrey and the Irish–Catalan physician Stephen Maturin. The 20-novel series, the first of which is Master and Commander, is known for its well-researched and highly detailed portrayal of early 19th-century life, as well as its authentic and evocative language. A partially finished 21st novel in the series was published posthumously containing facing pages of handwriting and typescript.
