«La Guerre des boutons» is the novel by Louis Pergaud, published by Folio in paperback (359 pages, in French).
The action follows two gangs of teenagers from neighboring villages who turn their rivalry into a war: they capture their opponents, beat them, strip them of their clothes and cut off their buttons as trophies. Between comedy and satire, the novel addresses the violence, friendship and loyalty typical of youth.
The novel was originally published in 1912; this 1995 French edition belongs to the Folio Plus collection, with complete text and activity dossier. In 1962 it was adapted into a movie by Yves Robert.
It can be used as school reading and is intended for young readers, with the support of the activity dossier.
