Set in the eighties in Glasgow, this moving novel tells the story of Agnes Bain, a woman struggling with poverty and addiction in a city devastated by the economic crisis. Abandoned by her husband, Agnes faces the care of her three children alone, taking refuge in alcohol. While her children abandon her one by one to save themselves, Shuggie, the youngest, refuses to give up and fights tirelessly to help his mother escape her desperate situation. A story of frustration, addiction and unconditional love that reveals the cruelty of poverty and the limits of love.
