In 1937, amidst the Spanish Civil War, the Republican government organizes an expedition to send a group of children to Mexico, including war orphans and children of Republican combatants, to protect them from the horror ravaging their country. With the approval of Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas, more than four hundred children arrive in Mexico in June of that year, malnourished and hoping to one day reunite with their loved ones. However, their fate would be very different, spending practically their entire lives in that distant country.
Among these children is Cosme, a young man from Almazán (Soria) who, in 1936, moves to Madrid to help his brother Antonio and his pregnant wife. The outbreak of war surprises him in the capital, and Antonio enrolls him in the expedition to Mexico to save him from certain death. In addition to experiencing the horrors of war, Cosme faces defeat, exile, and separation from his family. In Mexico, housed in a boarding school in Morelia, Cosme discovers a circle of abuse and arbitrariness, gradually losing his identity. Lola Moreno, through Cosme, presents us with the raw experience of the broken lives of the "children of Morelia", an episode that many prefer to forget.
