«La larga vida de Marianna Ucrìa» is the historical novel by Dacia Maraini, published by Seix Barral in paperback (277 pages, in Spanish).
Set in Sicily in the first half of the eighteenth century, it narrates the life of Marianna, the deaf-mute daughter of an aristocratic Palermo family. Her silent gaze portrays a world of rigid conventions, female oppression and inequality, as she tries to build her own identity against the current.
Translation from the Italian by Atilio Pentimalli Melacrino of «La lunga vita di Marianna Ucrìa». Novel winner of the Campiello Prize in 1990, published in the Biblioteca Breve collection by Seix Barral.
For readers of historical fiction and contemporary fiction with an interest in female portraits and eighteenth-century Sicily.
