Young Lexie Sinclair dreams of an extraordinary life and plans to escape to London from her small town. There she meets Innes Kent, who introduces her to the exciting world of bohemian Soho in the fifties, where she learns to be a reporter and meets important artists. Years later, in contemporary London, Elina, a young painter, navigates the first weeks of motherhood, struggling to find herself and unable to remember details about her birth. Her partner, Ted, is also disconcerted by fatherhood, which has unearthed confusing memories. Maggie O'Farrell presents a novel about two women connected over fifty years through art, love, betrayal, secrets and motherhood.
