«La madre» is the novel by Maxim Gorky published by Dalmau Socías in hardcover (366 pages, in Spanish).
In a working-class neighborhood, a mother sees how the arrest of her son, involved in the revolutionary movement, marks a turning point in her life. Little by little she moves closer to the struggle for workers' rights and awakens to a class consciousness that transforms her, in a story about oppression and the hope of a fairer future.
The novel was originally published in 1907; this 1988 Spanish edition belongs to the Biblioteca de Clásicos Universales collection (no. 36).
A work of foreign fiction for readers interested in Russian classics and stories of social consciousness.

Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, popularly known as Maxim Gorky, was a Russian and Soviet writer, journalist, and proponent of socialism. He was nominated five times for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Before his success as an author, he travelled widely across the Russian Empire, changing jobs frequently; these experiences would later influence his writing. He associated with fellow Russian writers Leo Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov, both mentioned by Gorky in his memoirs.
