Vishnu, doorman of a Bombay building, lies unconscious on the staircase as he dies; no one wants to take responsibility for him. The novel then opens to the lives of the neighbors and the complex structure of India: caste system, religious tensions, Hindu myths, and the search for meaning in everyday life, with humor and tenderness.
The work was originally published as «The Death of Vishnu»; it is the first installment of the series The Hindu Gods. It was nominated for the Booker Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award, and won the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize.
For readers of literary fiction and book clubs interested in contemporary India, its social system, and its spirituality.
