«La Papisa» is the historical novel by Donna Woolfolk Cross, published by Salamandra Ediciones in hardcover (446 pages, in Spanish).
The novel reconstructs the life of Joan, a ninth-century woman who defies the conventions of her time by adopting a male identity to devote herself to study. Educated in letters and medicine, she enters a monastery and her talent takes her to Rome, where she becomes embroiled in the political and amorous intrigues of the papal states until she is elected pope under the name John Anglicus. The work deals with the struggle of an extraordinary woman for knowledge in a world dominated by men.
This Spanish edition includes a translation by César Aira and is part of Salamandra's Historical Novel collection. The original title of the work is «Pope Joan».
