«La Regenta» is the novel by Spanish writer Leopoldo Alas «Clarín», published by Ediciones Orbis in paperback and in Spanish.
Ana Ozores, a young woman married to a much older man, lives in Vetusta, a fictional city representing Oviedo. Unsatisfied in her marriage, she seeks to fill the void with religion and love affairs; social hypocrisy and inner conflict mark her story in one of the peaks of Spanish naturalism.
The novel was originally published in two volumes in 1884 and 1885 and is considered one of the great Spanish novels of the 19th century. This edition belongs to the Alfara Collection.

Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, was a Spanish realist novelist and journalist born in Zamora. His inflammatory articles, known as paliques (“chitchat”), as well as his advocacy of liberalism and anti-clericalism, made him a formidable and controversial critical voice. He died in Oviedo.
