«La Regenta, Volume 1» is the realist novel by Leopoldo Alas «Clarín», published by Unidad Editorial in hardcover (381 pages, in Spanish).
Set in the city of Vetusta, it tells the story of Ana Ozores, married to a much older magistrate and stifled by the routine of a provincial, hypocritical society. Caught between religion and desire, Ana becomes the object of a dispute between an influential priest and a seducer, in an ironic critique of the Church and high society of the time.
First volume of La Regenta, originally published between 1884 and 1885. Spanish edition with a prologue by Leopoldo Alas, part of the 100 jewels of the millennium collection.
For readers of Spanish literary classics and of nineteenth-century realism and naturalism.

Leopoldo Enrique García-Alas y Ureña, also known as Clarín, was a Spanish realist novelist and journalist born in Zamora. His inflammatory articles, known as paliques (“chitchat”), as well as his advocacy of liberalism and anti-clericalism, made him a formidable and controversial critical voice. He died in Oviedo.
