«La vie, mode d'emploi» is the novel by Georges Perec published by Hachette Littérature in paperback (699 pages, in French).
The novel is set in a Parisian house on Rue Simon-Crubellier and traverses it like an enormous puzzle: the pieces are the dwellings and their inhabitants, whose objects, gestures, memories and sensations are reconstructed chapter by chapter. Together they form a microcosm of past and present lives.
Originally published in 1978, it received the Prix Médicis and was chosen as the best novel of the decade 1975-1985 in a Le Monde survey.
Georges Perec was a French novelist, filmmaker, documentalist, and essayist. He was a member of the Oulipo group. His father died as a soldier early in the Second World War and his mother was killed in the Holocaust. Many of his works deal with absence, loss, and identity, often through word play.
