«L'adversari» is Emmanuel Carrère's chronicle, published in 2000 by Editorial Empúries in paperback (144 pages, in Catalan).
Carrère reconstructs the real case of Jean-Claude Romand, a man who for years pretended to be a doctor and WHO official. When his double life is about to be exposed, the plot turns into a family tragedy. The author explores imposture, guilt and evil in a chronicle that reads like a novel.
Translation from French by Marta Marfany Simó. Volume 22 of the Anagrama/Empúries collection, co-published with Editorial Anagrama.
Recommended for readers of literary non-fiction and true crime, interested in real cases of imposture and in the work of Emmanuel Carrère.
