«L'alouette» is the play by Jean Anouilh about Joan of Arc, published by Gallimard Jeunesse in paperback (192 pages, in French).
It dramatizes Joan of Arc's trial and the path that took her from shepherdess to military heroine: the voices that drive her to fight against the English, the ecclesiastical interrogation and her refusal to submit to the justice of men. Anouilh alternates the trial with the memory of her deeds and her coronation, and offers a human as well as legendary view of the Maid of Orleans, with dialogues that underline her strength, her faith and her fragility.
Originally published in 1953, this 2007 edition belongs to the Scripto collection from Gallimard Jeunesse.

Jean Marie Lucien Pierre Anouilh was a French dramatist and screenwriter whose career spanned five decades. Though his work ranged from high drama to absurdist farce, Anouilh is best known for his 1944 production of Sophocles' Antigone, which, though performed without objection by censors, was nevertheless seen as an attack on Marshal Pétain's Vichy government. His plays are less experimental than those of his contemporaries, having clearly organized plot and eloquent dialogue. One of France's most prolific writers after World War II, much of Anouilh's work deals with themes of maintaining integrity in a world of moral compromise.
