Este libro explora el arte clásico y el barroco, dos grandes corrientes artísticas que se desarrollaron en Europa durante el siglo XVII. El clasicismo, que se manifestó principalmente en la arquitectura, se caracteriza por la línea recta, la rigurosidad y la sobriedad. Por otro lado, el barroco, nacido en Italia con el deseo de la Iglesia de revivificar la fe católica, se distingue por la curva, el tumulto, la sobrecarga y la proliferación de temas. La obra sigue una cronología que abarca desde el siglo XVII hasta mediados del siglo XVIII, y presenta a grandes artistas como Bernini, Poussin, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer y Gainsborough.
