The Good Soldier Švejk is a novel by Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek, first published in 1921. The work is a biting and funny satire against the absurdity of wars, set in World War I. The protagonist, Schwejk, is a soldier who, with cunning and apparent stupidity, criticizes the military machine and the authorities. Jaroslav Hašek was a Czech writer, humorist, satirist, journalist, bohemian, first anarchist and then communist, and commissar of the Red Army against the Czechoslovak Legion. He is best known for his novel The Fateful Adventures of the Good Soldier Švejk During the World War, an unfinished novel about a soldier in World War I and a satire on the ineptitude of authority figures. The novel has been translated into about 60 languages, making it the most translated novel in Czech literature.
