«Le chant des génies» is the children's illustrated book by Nacer Khémir, published by Actes Sud in paperback (40 pages, in French).
A poor peasant decides to stop being poor and, ignoring his wife, cultivates the field of the genies. A voice rises from the earth and offers him help, but one should not ask just anything of those beings. Based on a tale from the Sahel, the story becomes unsettling as greed clouds the hero's judgment; the illustrations heighten that unease.
Illustrations by Emre Orhun. Part of the Les Grands Livres collection. Published on October 11, 2001.
Recommended for children aged 3 and up and, given its unsettling traditional tale tone, also for the general public.
