«Le Roi de fer» is the historical novel by Maurice Druon, published by Le Livre de Poche in paperback format (256 pages, in French).
First installment of the Accursed Kings saga, set in 14th-century France. The narrative opens with the trial of the Templars and the curse uttered by their grand master, Jacques de Molay, before he dies at the stake. From there, the court of Philip IV the Fair is shaken by intrigues, betrayals and state secrets that foreshadow the fall of the Capetian dynasty and the outbreak of the Hundred Years' War.
Volume 1 of the series «Les Rois maudits» (The Accursed Kings).
Recommended for readers of historical fiction and for those seeking the work that inspired George R. R. Martin in creating A Song of Ice and Fire.
Maurice Druon was a French novelist and a member of the Académie Française, of which he served as "Perpetual Secretary" (chairman) between 1985 and 1999.
