«Le scarabée magique» is the children's picture book by Michel Girin, illustrated by Cécile Geiger, published by Hatier in paperback (48 pages, in French).
Rajeev, an eight-year-old Indian boy, works in a brick factory to help his family. When he finds a green beetle —an insect that tradition links with water and wealth—, the factory owner tries to seize it and the boy flees to the hills. The story denounces child labor and the lack of water in the region.
It belongs to the Ribambelle CE1 series (album no. 4), within the ten-volume reading method for cycle 2.
Suitable as school reading for the CE1 level and also as a story to read at home.
