«L’enfant» is the children's novel by Colas Gutman, published by L'Ecole des Loisirs in paperback (37 pages, in French).
The book tells how Léonard, a city boy, spends a day in the countryside with his parents, where the farm animals mistake him for an animal and ask him what a child is for. The doubt unsettles him and leads him to reflect on his place in the world, in a story about identity, usefulness and parental love.
The book is illustrated by Delphine Perret and won the Prix Sorcières 2012 in the first-readers category.
A book suitable for children aged 6 to 9 who already read on their own, also recommended as a first independent read.
