«L'enfant» is the autobiographical novel by Jules Vallès, published by France Loisirs in hardcover (313 pages, in French).
An autobiographical account of a child growing up in nineteenth-century France, caught between his mother's harshness, his father's weakness, and a rigid education that leaves its mark. With a direct style and defiant humor, Vallès turns misery and humiliation into a protest against the conventions and injustices of his time.
First part of the Jacques Vingtras trilogy. This French-language edition from France Loisirs dates from 1987 and includes notes, a preface and a biography.
Will appeal to those seeking nineteenth-century French literature about childhood and social criticism.
Jules Vallès was a French journalist, author, and left-wing political activist.
