«Lenguaje, poder y pedagogía. Niños y niñas bilingües entre dos fuegos» is Jim Cummins's essay on education and linguistic diversity, published by Ediciones Morata in paperback (352 pages, in Spanish).
It starts from population mobility to analyze how linguistic and cultural diversity has become the norm in many urban schools and what challenges it poses to teachers. It examines the time needed to master a second language, the difference between conversational fluency and academic proficiency, the role of the mother tongue in the curriculum and the effectiveness of bilingual education programs, paying attention to how power relations in society are reflected in classroom interaction.
Work published in 2002 in the Coedición Ministerio de Educación collection, with the subtitle «Niños y niñas bilingües entre dos fuegos». Jim Cummins is a professor in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the University of Toronto.
Intended for teachers, educational researchers and education policy makers working with diverse students, as well as for students of pedagogy and sociology of education.
