«Les ombres du passé» is the suspense novel by Thomas H. Cook, published by Editions Gallimard in paperback (288 pages, in French).
Twenty years later, Roy returns to his Virginia hometown to care for his sick father. The return unearths his brother's suicide after killing his girlfriend's parents, the resentment of a father who never supported him, and the unfinished story with Lila, his great love. A retired sheriff watches him with unsettling strangeness.
