«L'homme à l'oreille coupée» is the young adult novel by Jean-Claude Mourlevat, published by Thierry Magnier Jeunesse in paperback, in French.
In an inn in a Norwegian port, an old man missing an ear entertains his listeners every night with a different explanation of how he lost it: a circus act that went wrong, a jealous fight, an overheated stove, or an encounter with pirates. The narrative chains together contradictory versions and plays with the idea that perhaps there is no single truth.
The story was originally published in 2003 and is cataloged as children's and young adult literature.
For young readers who enjoy short, mysterious stories told with wit; its pocket format makes it easy to carry.
