«Longe de Manaus» is the novel by Francisco José Viegas, published by ASA in paperback (448 pages, in Portuguese).
Detective Jaime Ramos investigates the death of a stranger in Porto; the case takes him from Portugal to Brazil and to the memory of Angola, among solitary characters whose biographies are reconstructed from almost nothing. The crime plot alternates European and Brazilian Portuguese and ends up being a portrait of Portuguese solitude.
Subtitled «O romance da solidão portuguesa», it won the Grande Prémio de Romance e Novela APE/IPLB 2005. This Portuguese edition is the 6th and includes an introduction by Paulo César Rodrigues Junior.
For readers of crime fiction and Portuguese literature, especially those who appreciate plots with historical and geographical background.
