L'ordre du jour is a seminal work on the First World War, following the journey of young student Adolf Reisiger as he volunteers for the German army. Through a stark and direct narrative, the author depicts the horrors of the trenches, the fighting on the Russian front, and the dehumanization of conflict, pushing the protagonist to the brink of madness. The novel is noted for its innovative structure, which blends war accounts with historical documents, press clippings, and period advertisements, offering a powerful and subversive perspective on the Great War.
