«Los bienes de este mundo» is the novel by Irène Némirovsky, published by Salamandra in paperback (224 pages, in Spanish).
Set in northern France, it tells the story of a bourgeois family that has owned a paper factory for generations. Pierre Hardelot defies his parents by breaking off his engagement to the wealthy heiress Simone and marrying Agnès, a young woman without a dowry from the lower middle class. Between the decline of the Hardelots and the turbulent events culminating in the German occupation, Némirovsky composes a bittersweet love story narrated with an incisive gaze, though tinged with understanding towards her characters.
Novel included in the Salamandra Narrativa collection. Originally written in French, it was published in 1947, five years after the death of its author in Auschwitz.
Recommended for readers of historical fiction and for those who have enjoyed Suite française, also by Irène Némirovsky.

Irène Némirovsky was a novelist of Ukrainian Jewish origin who was born in Kiev, then in the Russian Empire. She lived more than half her life in France and wrote in French, but was denied French nationality. Arrested as a Jew under the racial laws – which did not take into account her conversion to Roman Catholicism – she died in Auschwitz at the age of 39. Némirovsky is best known for the posthumously published Suite française.
