«Los sótanos del Vaticano» is the novel by André Gide published by Orbis in hardcover, in Spanish.
The action takes place in Rome at the end of the 19th century: a gang of swindlers convinces devout Catholics that Pope Leo XIII has been kidnapped by Freemasons and replaced by a double. With black humor and ambiguous characters, Gide satirizes religious and bourgeois hypocrisy.
This edition belongs to the collection «Los Premios Nobel» (no. 79), produced in Barcelona in 1983. Translation by Emma Calatayud of the French original «Les caves du Vatican»; 201 pages.
For readers of classic French fiction and social satires, as well as for those interested in the work of a Nobel Prize winner.
