«Magia de reina, magia de rey» is the fantasy novel by Ian Watson, published by Bibliópolis in paperback (256 pages, in Spanish).
In Bellogard and Chorny, two kingdoms locked in a cyclical war, magic follows the rules of chess: each participant embodies a piece. Pedino, called to fight as a pawn-squire, doubts the meaning of the conflict because winning or losing leads to the same outcome. Could it be possible to draw or escape the eternal return? A social satire.
Third title in the Bibliópolis Fantástica collection, published in 2003 with a translation by Lorenzo Luengo Regalado; original in English: Queenmagic, Kingmagic.
For those seeking fantasy with an intellectual and satirical background, with chess as the narrative axis.
Ian Watson was a British science fiction writer who lived in Gijón, Spain.
