«Mar Morto» is the novel by Jorge Amado, published by Sic in paperback (277 pages, in Portuguese).
The novel takes place on the docks of Bahia and portrays the lives of sailors, master saveiros, tattooed men and rogues who tell and sing stories of the port. At its center is the love story between Guma and Lívia, crossed by the sea and by the cult of Iemanjá, to whom the people attribute their tales.
The work was originally published in 1936; this edition is from 2009. The novel inspired the Brazilian soap opera «Porto dos Milagres».

Jorge Leal Amado de Faria, known as Jorge Amado, was a Brazilian writer of the modernist school. His work reflects the image of a Mestiço Brazil and is marked by religious syncretism. He depicted a cheerful and optimistic country that was beset, at the same time, with deep social and economic differences.
