«Mon ami Chafiq» is the children's novel by Jan Needle, published by Père Castor Flammarion in paperback (284 pages, in French).
In the north of England, the friendship between Bernard and Shofiq is born from a violent incident. After defending his sisters from a gang, Bernard, who despises Shofiq, becomes a witness and must decide whether to tell the truth. Racial tension and pressure from adults and institutions make their relationship a difficult but necessary bond.
Original work: «My Mate Shofiq» (1979), translated into French by Martine Delattre. Castor Poche collection no. 144.
Aimed at young readers; its rawness and its debate on racism also make it relevant for adults and reading mediators.
James Albert Needle, known as Jan Needle, was an English author. He wrote over thirty novels, as well as books and plays for adults and children, books of criticism, cartoons and radio and television serials and series.
