In 'Mount Misery', Roy Basch, the protagonist of 'The House of God', continues his training, this time specializing in psychiatry at the renowned Mount Misery Hospital. Through his experience, Shem offers a biting and funny caricature of the different trends in psychiatry, exploring the grotesque that theories about mental illness can become. With a wild talent, Shem presents a thoroughly bloody and devastatingly funny vision of the world of psychiatry.
Samuel Shem is the pen name of the American psychiatrist Stephen Joseph Bergman. His main works are The House of God and Mount Misery, both fictional but close-to-real first-hand descriptions of the training of doctors in the United States.
