Set in the quiet Israeli town of Tel Kedar in the Negev desert, the story follows Noa and Theo. After seven years of living together, their relationship is at a standstill. Theo, a successful sixty-year-old urban planner, has become increasingly introverted, while Noa, a younger and energetic literature teacher, is constantly seeking new challenges. Following the death of one of her students, Noa is tasked with establishing a rehabilitation center for young drug addicts. Her struggle to bring the project to life, facing opposition from a community fearful of change, tests their relationship. Narrated by both protagonists, the book explores the human soul and the enduring, tender love that binds them together despite their personal struggles.

Amos Oz was an Israeli writer, novelist, journalist, and intellectual. He was also a professor of Hebrew literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. From 1967 onwards, Oz was a prominent advocate of a two-state solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
