«O nome da rosa» is the historical mystery novel by Umberto Eco, published by Publico in Portuguese (475 pages).
Set in a Benedictine abbey in 1327, the plot follows Brother William of Baskerville and his young pupil Adso of Melk as they investigate mysterious deaths. The trail leads to a labyrinthine, forbidden library, where books and theological disputes are hidden. Eco combines investigation with medieval history, semiotics and philosophy, and addresses faith, heresy and the power of knowledge.
Portuguese translation by Maria Celeste Pinto, published in Porto in 2002 in the Mil Folhas collection.
For readers of historical and mystery fiction, with an interest in the Middle Ages and in the philosophical and religious debates of the 14th century.

Umberto Eco was an Italian medievalist, philosopher, semiotician, novelist, cultural critic, and political and social commentator. In English, he is best known for his popular 1980 novel The Name of the Rose, a historical mystery combining semiotics in fiction with biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory, as well as Foucault's Pendulum, his 1988 novel which touches on the history of occultism and its contemporary interpretation through the new age movement.
