«Pompeji oder Die fünf Reden des Jowna» is the historical novel by Eugen Ruge, published by dtv Verlagsgesellschaft in paperback (359 pages, in German).
In AD 79, Jowna, a destitute immigrant, detects troubling signs on Vesuvius and leads an evacuation movement in Pompeii. Amid the skepticism of the powerful and popular fear, the plot becomes a parable about opportunism, populism and collective denial in the face of catastrophe.
This novel originally appeared in 2023; the dtv edition was published in June 2024 and is listed as a SPIEGEL bestseller.
May appeal to those seeking a social satire that connects ancient Rome with current debates on populism, misinformation and climate catastrophe.
Eugen Ruge is a German writer, director and translator from Russian. In 2011 he won the German Book Prize for In Times of Fading Light.
