«Rafara» is the African folk tale written and illustrated by Anne-Catherine De Boël, published by L'Ecole des loisirs in hardcover (48 pages, in French).
Rafara is the youngest of three sisters; her older, jealous sisters abandon her in the forest while picking blackberries. There she is captured by Trimode, a monster with geometric patterns who fattens her up to eat her. Locked in his lair, Rafara receives help from a little mouse, who gives her a stick, a stone and an egg to escape. With these objects she transforms the landscape —a lake, a forest and a mountain— to slow down the ogre, until a great bird carries her back to her village.
Illustrated picture book designed for early readers from about 6 years old, recommended for those who enjoy traditional tales and stories from other cultures.
